The Michael D. Fender Food Pantry
Each Saturday morning at 8:30 am, we distribute grocery bags of non-perishable food to individuals outside the Parish House of The Church of the Ascension at 12 West 11th Street in Manhattan (just west of Fifth Avenue). Clients line up on the north side of 11th Street after 8:00 am. Anyone who comes to our door receives a bag of food, as long as supplies last. We strive to serve everyone, and to this date, have not had an eligibility or needs test to receive food.
This is a very important ministry for Ascension Outreach, because it directly aids those most need in our neighborhood and city. In addition, it is an example of putting our faith into action.
What Volunteers Do
Four to five volunteers are needed each morning. We hand out numbers to the people in line and food bags are distributed around 9:00 am to them in number order.
Volunteers also prepare new bags for the next food pantry day. The food is stored in the ground floor of the Parish House where bags are packed and then carried upstairs and stored by the front door, ready to go. Volunteering takes about three hours and you are usually needed once every four-six weeks, starting at 8 a.m.
