Beginning in 1977, a tutoring program has operated in the Ascension Parish Hall, helping 4th- to 9th-grade student beter their skills in reading, math, and critical thinking, as well as imparting to them the value of embracing diversity.
In 1982, a man named Michael Fender, alarmed at what he correctly diagnosed as a growing societal affliction, established a food pantry. The Michael D. Fender Memorial Food Pantry at the Church of the Ascension has worked continuously to ease the problem of hunger in the Greenwich Village section of Manhattan.
A meal ministry to the residents of Bailey House, housing for homless persons with AIDS, was established later.
Incorporated in 2006 under the name Ascension Outreach, Inc., these ministries continue to serve the needs of humanity in the name of Christ. Ascension Outreach, Inc., is a member agency of the Food Bank for New York City. The work of expanding our capacity and incorporation in 2006-07 was underwritten by a grant from the Starr Foundation through America's Second Harvest; we are grateful for their support. Ascension Outreach, Inc., is a nonprofit organization under I.R.S. code 501(c)(3).
